Sembang Kreatif with Michael Chuah

Explore new, yet strangely familiar worlds!

On November 4, we had the honour to have Michael Chuah for joining our Chief Geek, Silmyi M. Sadek, in our fourth episode of Sembang Kreatif. See what he shared with us!

The design-graduate artist began his career as a comic artist in 2001. Starting by being a comic assistant at Gempak, Michael developed his own character until the editor saw his potential and encouraged him to create and publish his first debut piece, “Gengkey”. As Michael worked with many other comic artists, he learned various drawing styles which also helped his works evolve over time.

Through his famous works, like “Office Survival”, “The Never-ending Tales” and “Yuurei Nekko Sama”, Michael has captured ordinary life and elevated it into an art form that effortlessly resonates with his readers because of how they are closely inspired by day-to-day phenomena. Throughout his remarkable and long-standing career, Michael has never stopped his habit of observation, even with the advancement of technology and the evolution of popular culture. He is active on social media including TikTok to keep his creative perspective fresh and up-to-date. Michael’s works have travelled far from the US to Hong Kong among others.

To wrap up the session, Michael sent out a message for young artists to keep honing their craft and not be afraid of making mistakes. He encouraged artists to explore the real world outside social media for better touch with real life and thus, better inspiration. He believes in this current vast media, each piece of work will find the right audience.

Thank you Michael Chuah for the insightful talk! We hope to see you at another chance soon.
